Reality Check

During our last home visit I asked our workers how exactly we are suppose to prepare for a child when we are not sure how old they are going to be. My worry is a newborn needs completely different things than a toddler. Our worker told us that when we are finally done of all the visits and they make their final recommendation we will then need to decide exactly what we want, a baby or a toddler. She said the reality is if we have our hearts set on a newborn the wait will be very very long. Jason and I were talking about this the other night, his fear is if we were to get a two year old they will have a lot more baggage and memories of what they have gone through vs. a baby. I agree, as the reality is the kids that social services has available for adoption are in their custody due to issues that were going on in their homes and the parents have lost their rights to the children. After a lot of soul searching I feel we are strong enough to adopt a toddler. When we are offered a child it will be presented to us on paper first, Jason and I will have a chance to review the file privately and make a decision together as to whether we feel that particular child is a "fit" for us. I honestly feel this is important as I do not want to put us in a situation that we can not handle as this would not be good for either us or the child. I truly believe we will just know in our hearts right away when our child is presented to us, and I can't wait for that day to come!
